Answers to the questions we get most often about AI cost control, multi-model usage, quotas and budgets, Family Shield Mode, and early access.

01 — General04 questions

Q.01What is AI at Cost?+

AI at Cost is a multi-model AI platform designed to give teams and operators full control over AI usage and spending. Instead of forcing everyone into one AI model and one pricing plan, AI at Cost lets you choose the right AI model per task, control usage with roles, quotas, and budgets, track usage with transparent token pricing, and pay only for what you actually use.

This is AI infrastructure, not a consumer chatbot.

Q.02Who is it for?+

AI at Cost is designed for:

  • Solo founders who want predictable AI costs
  • Teams that need shared access with limits
  • Agencies and operators managing multiple users
  • Families exploring AI safely, with Family Shield Mode

The goal is simple: use AI where it makes sense — and stop paying for waste.

Q.03Is AI at Cost affiliated with OpenAI or Anthropic?+

No. AI at Cost is an independent platform and is not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic, or any AI model provider. We provide AI services through licensed APIs, with a focus on cost transparency, usage control, and responsible access.

Q.04What’s currently in the MVP?+

Our initial release focuses on the essentials:

  • Single chat interface
  • Model selector per message
  • Accounts and user roles
  • Token-based billing and quotas
  • Basic AI usage dashboard

We are intentionally building focused, reliable AI cost management tools — not bloated features.

02 — Multi-model03 questions

Q.05What does “multi-model” actually mean here?+

Not all AI models are equal — and they shouldn’t cost the same. Some models are more accurate but expensive. Some are faster but less detailed. Some are better suited for writing, summarising, or analysis. Some are safer and more restricted for family use.

AI at Cost lets you select a model per message, so you’re never forced to pay premium prices for simple tasks. This flexibility is the foundation of cost-effective AI usage.

Q.06Can I switch models mid-conversation?+

Yes. Model choice is per-message, not per-conversation. The picker shows the per-token rate at the point of use, so the cost trade-off is visible before you send the request.

Q.07Can I restrict expensive models for some users?+

Yes. Model access is governed by role. You can restrict the reasoning class to senior accounts, leave the balanced and fast classes open to everyone, and gate Family Shield Mode for child accounts.

03 — Quotas & budgets04 questions

Q.08How do quotas work?+

AI at Cost includes account-level usage limits, per-user quotas, model access restrictions, and clear usage reporting by user and model. Quotas can be set in tokens, dollars, or messages — whichever is most natural for your workflow.

These features give owners and operators predictable AI spending — with no surprises.

Q.09What happens when a user hits their quota?+

You choose. The defaults are:

  • Soft cap — user is warned and asked to confirm further usage
  • Hard cap — further requests are blocked until the next period or admin reset
  • Downgrade — requests automatically route to the cheapest model class instead of blocking
Q.10Can I set a workspace-wide budget ceiling?+

Yes. Budgets stack: per-user quotas roll up into a workspace ceiling. You’ll see live progress against both, with alerts at 50%, 80%, and 100% by default.

Q.11Can I see usage broken down by user and by model?+

Yes. Reporting is two-axis by default: per-user and per-model. You can see who’s using what, what each request cost, and how the distribution shifts over time.

04 — Family Shield Mode03 questions

Q.12What is Family Shield Mode?+

AI should be powerful — and responsible. Family Shield Mode allows parents to give kids access to AI while maintaining control: daily AI usage limits, restricted AI models, topic and safety filters, and clear boundaries without surveillance.

Q.13Does it monitor or log a child’s conversations?+

No. Family Shield Mode is built around boundaries, not surveillance. Parents see usage volume and which models were used — they do not see the contents of conversations.

Q.14Can I set different rules for different kids?+

Yes. Each child account has its own daily limit, allowed model list, and topic filter profile. Rules can be tightened or relaxed independently.

05 — Billing03 questions

Q.15How does pricing work?+

AI at Cost uses transparent token-based billing. Each model class has a published per-million-token rate, visible at the point of use and in your billing dashboard. You pay only for what you actually use — no minimums, no per-seat lock-in.

Q.16Are there hidden margins on the model rates?+

Pricing is published. Our rates include a transparent platform margin on top of provider costs, disclosed in the pricing page. The point of the platform is cost transparency — we won’t undermine that with hidden markups.

Q.17Can I export billing data?+

Yes. Per-request billing data can be exported as CSV or pulled via API, broken down by user, model, and period. This is core to AI at Cost — your data, your reporting.
